A Creative Journey: Initial Steps in Curiosity

Creating WattBoy has been a unique and rewarding experience, combining our love for storytelling with the challenge of making a complex concept like electricity engaging and understandable for young children.

The process began with an idea to teach children ages 4 to 7 about where electricity comes from, how it works, and how it gets to their homes. We wanted the story to be both educational and fun, using the character of WattBoy—a quirky robot with mismatched arms and legs—as the central guide.

The first step in the creative process was developing WattBoy’s character. We envisioned him as an inquisitive, shy, and imperfect robot, which would make him relatable to kids. His curiosity drives the story, and his mistakes make him feel more, well, human.

Despite being unsure of himself, WattBoy embarks on a brave journey. His interactions with the environment are framed through the lens of his sketches, which made for a fun way to explain complex concepts in a simple, child-friendly way. WattBoy LOVES to create too–this is important–it’s how we as his creators connect directly to our created!

The next challenge was balancing the science with the story. Since our first book aims to teach real-world concepts about electricity, we had to simplify the information without losing its integrity. We also had to find ways to make the illustrations visually appealing and easy for young readers to understand, which led us to experiment with different styles of drawing.

WattBoy’s initial journey was a journey for us too, learning how to blend creativity with education. Every sketch he makes is not just a way for him to explain how electricity travels but also a metaphor for the process of discovery—both for him and for the readers. It’s been a true labor of love, and we hope that kids will not only learn about electricity but also feel inspired to explore and ask questions, just like WattBoy.
